Attorney Gina Mosley Discusses U.S. Immigration Reform

In the United States, immigration reform and border security have become hot-button issues. Another issue is that of the immigration policy known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Some individuals who were brought to the United States illegally as children may be eligible for work permits in the U.S., and can receive a two-year deferment from deportation. Plans to phase out DACA were the focus of the incoming Trump administration, which claimed that native workers were being unfairly harmed by the presence of and work eligibility by illegal immigrants. In September, 2017, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that DACA was being repealed. This announcement was met with legal challenges, including those by Democratic and Republican lawmakers, business leaders, and immigrant advocacy groups. 15 U.S. states and the District of Columbia filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, seeking to curtail the repeal of DACA.

California and three other states filed a similar but separate lawsuit. Gina Mosely believes that children of illegal immigrants deserve a chance to become U.S. citizens rather than face immediate deportation. "The children protected under the current DACA policy came to the U.S. not out of their own accord," says Gina. "It is unfair to penalize them for the actions of others."
